Atherosclerosis, osteoporosis and orthopaedic implants, markers for brain tumors, connective tissue repair, neuro-rehabilitation: these are some of the areas where our faculty are doing ground-breaking research in conjunction with clinical partners throughout New York City.


The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City College of New York is an integral part of the thriving life science community in New York City. The department is the primary engineering partner in the New York Center for Biomedical Engineering (NYCBE), a unique consortium of the city leaders medical research centers.

As part of the Grove School of Engineering at CCNY, we are the only public biomedical engineering program in New York City. We offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering.

The creation in 2002 of a new Department of Biomedical Engineering at CCNY, along with a new bachelor’s degree program in Biomedical Engineering, were the culmination of an eight-year effort supported by three Special Opportunity Awards from the Whitaker Foundation and Educational Opportunity Grants for Minorities from the National Institutes of Health and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The construction of new office facilities and state-of-the-art laboratories for the Department of Biomedical Engineering were made possible by a generous grant from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) grew out of the New York Center for Biomedical Engineering (NYCBE) at CCNY, a consortium of New York City medical institutions established in 1994 to serve as a focal center for collaborative biomedical engineering research in the New York metropolitan area. A number of milestones have marked the rapid growth of BME at CCNY:

  • 1994: development of a 15-credit undergraduate concentration in BME
  • 1996: the NYCBE becomes a CUNY Institute
  • 1999: establishment of a Ph.D. program in BME
  • 2000: creation of a Master's program in BME
  • 2002: creation of a Bachelor's program in BME and founding of the BME department
