Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree from a college or university of accredited standing, in a branch of engineering or science appropriate to the study of biomedical engineering. The applicant's academic record must demonstrate the promise of superior performance in advanced study and research, as evidenced by a strong undergraduate record, strong letters of recommendation, and a focused statement of purpose that explains why the applicant wants to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering.
The general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required. Applicants from countries where English is not the primary language must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). While there are no minimum scores for the GRE or TOEFL, it is expected that the scores demonstrate aptitude for graduate research.
For entry into the Ph.D. program, courses normally taken as an undergraduate in biomedical engineering should have been completed (click here for the list of courses). Prior to commencing graduate coursework, the BME Ph.D. Advisor will prepare a proposed curriculum that may include courses from the list if any have not been completed so that every student is prepared for graduate studies in biomedical engineering.
Students applying to the Ph.D. program with a master's degree may transfer up to 30 credits if the coursework is similar to the courses in the CCNY biomedical engineering Ph.D. program.
